The Indestructible Bible

No other book has been so attacked throughout history as has the Bible. Countless are the men who have sought to eradicate it—to do away with the Word of God once and for all, never to see it again. However,as mere men, they are powerless to accomplish such a feat.

For example, there was King Jehoiakim as recorded in the book of Jeremiah. “Now the king sat in the winter house in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him. And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth” (Jer. 36:22-23).

The king cut the roll into little pieces and threw it into the fire, but Jeremiah was guided by God to write it again and we have it today (Jer. 36:27-30). Kings cannot destroy the Bible!

Then there was the popular critic of Christianity who wrote via the pen name, Voltaire. The French philosopher was a skeptic who destroyed the faith of many people. In fact, he was so bold in his denunciation of Christianity that he boasted that within 100 years of his death, the Bible would totally disappear from the face of the earth. Voltaire died in 1728, but the Bible lives on! The irony of history is that 50 years after his death, the Geneva Bible Society moved into his former house and used his printing presses to print thousands of Bibles! Philosophers cannot destroy the Bible!

The Bible has been preserved from such destruction because it is the inspired word of God Himself! Having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, But the word of the LORD endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you. (1 Peter 1:23-25)

No man can destroy the Bible! When this is considered along with such evidence as the predictive prophecy contained in Scripture, the amazing unity displayed, and even the scientific foreknowledge recorded therein, can there be any doubt that the Bible is a book given to us by God? Friends, we have the words of the living God—let us live by them!
